The eagles soar, circle and perch --
eye crowds of humans gathered below,
on bridges and in the woods,
snapping photos, taking videos.
They might be thinking
Have you not seen hungry birds before?
Can’t we eat in peace?
Don’t you have anything better to do?
The people ooh and ahh and point.
Look at the majestic wingspan,
the regal white cap, glittering eyes,
the amazing talons that shoot out,
grab unwary carp or bass destined for
baby eaglets grumbling stomachs.
Like certain fictional characters in Tolkein’s books,
they rule the skies and dominate imaginations.
It is interesting to contemplate these bird emperors
are relatives in the Vulture family.
Beauty resides everywhere.
